St. Christopher's by-the-Sea
About St. Christopher's Montessori School

St. Christopher's by-the-Sea Episcopal Montessori School was established in 1968 with the opening of its preschool program. In subsequent years, the school expanded to include elementary education for children in grades one through five. Today, St. Christopher's offers a small and nurturing educational environment within the diverse and international community of Key Biscayne.
St. Christopher's maintains a low student-to-teacher ratio of 11 to 1:

  • Fully-qualified Montessori teachers for all Pre-K and Elementary classrooms
  • Additional teacher's-aide in each pre-school class

The school is proud of the personal & professional experience and dedication each teacher brings to the classroom. The maximum school-wide enrollment is 145 students.

The school's teaching philosophy is based on the Montessori method providing information in a concrete step by step process through designed Montessori apparatus.

  • Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Geography and Science make up our core curriculum.
  • In Art, the children experiment with various media such as fingerpaint, water colors, ink, paper of different color, texture, shape and size, collage materials and clay. Lives of known artists and their styles are also taught to the children.
  • Music is taught through movement, singing and listening.
  • Physical education is taught using balance beams by catching & bouncing balls, and by hopping & skipping during daily line-time in the Pre-School. The Elementary students learn conditioning, throwing and kicking activities that prepare them for team sports.

Religious concepts in general are woven throughout the Monterssori curriculum.

  • Daily prayer and thanksgiving prior to meals are part of the academic life of St. Christopher's.
  • The Wednesday chapel service includes a homily by the Headmaster which usually highlights a universal principle of religion.

Playground

The importance of technology in our society is not taken for granted.

  • Students aged four and older are given weekly, introductory computer lessons.
  • St. Christopher's has its own library with computers to provide students with immediate resources.
  • As students enter the elementary grades, they go to the Key Biscayne Library every two weeks to take full advantage of the library's academic and technological offerings.

A variety of after-school activities are also provided including:

  • After school care
  • Ballet
  • Gymnastics
  • Spanish - Spanish is taught as a second language in a way that is harmonious to the Montessori Philosophy.

St. Christopher's continually seeks to incorporate other extracurricular opportunities for all students. We at St. Christopher's feel blessed to have been entrusted with the education of generations of young Key Biscayners.
